The purpose of this page is to challenge me to open my eyes and truly see the world which surrounds me. So often we trudge though our daily routine, too busy or preoccupied to notice the little miracles happening all around us. I hope to capture, through the lens of a camera, glimpses of my sometimes mundane but glorious little world. I will attempt to post one snapshot each day to share with you. Enjoy!

Stress fracture to the left foot.  What a great way to start the summer!  Dave wants me to note this happened while I was on a regular run in my Vibram 5-finger shoes.  It's true, that's when it happened.  I mentioned this to my Doc and she says it has nothing to do with it.  She then went on to say these things just happen as we get older.  Thanks, I feel so much better now.

Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts from the Aloha Council on Oahu spent the afternoon staking flags and placing leis at the head of every single headstone in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, also know as Punchbowl Nation Cemetery. Since it's dedication on September 2, 1949, 34,000 veterans of World War I, World War II, the Korean and Vietnam wars have been interred here.  Please take a moment to reflect upon the men and women of our great nation who serve and protect us today and those who went before them.

We chose to spend the afternoon at the big base pool and diving well.  The boys had a blast jumping off the diving boards, going down the loopty-loo water slide and hanging out together in the water.  Karen and I enjoyed the show and some sunshine.  Another great day in Hawaii!

Dave and I took a drive down to Lanikai this morning.  The beaches are sandy white and the water is pristine aqua blue.  There are quite a few public parks and launch points for kayakers, paddle boarders, windsurfers and kite surfers.  Pretty good people watching too!

As I stated in a previous blog there is a big exercise going on somewhere nearby in the islands and our air traffic activity has increased significantly.  We've seen a lot of different aircraft we don't normally get to see here.  For today though, I thought I'd show off some of the regulars.  This big baby is an Air Force C-17 Globemaster III.   They're stationed on the Leeward side of Oahu, but use the Windward side to bounce and practice landing/take off.  Since this plane is SO large it's intriguing to watch.   I find myself silently and mentally urging the plane back up into the air as it slowly but surely leaves the end of the runway. Check them out at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_C-17_Globemaster_III .   In the background is a row of Navy P-3 Orions.  They are at the "Hot Spot" and being loaded up with "gear" for their part in the exercise.   This aircraft was originally designed to hunt submarines but has proven itself many times over as a multi functional warrior in many arenas from the Cuban Missile Crisis to Vietnam to Desert Storm, Shield and Iraqi Freedom to Afghanistan and Pakistan to Somalia to Latin America and most recently to Libya and Japan.  For more info on this mighty aircraft go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P-3_Orion .

There seems to be a big exercise going on close by because there are lots of different types of visiting airplanes here.  This is an Air Force F 15 Strike Eagle.  The details came from Dave this time.  He says the boys need to work on their identification skills because they told me it was a Navy F/A 18 Hornet....  All I know is they are LOUD!

The boys and I met the new dentist today.  We all got regular check-ups, x-rays and cleanings.  The entire crew needs to go back later this week for sealants, impressions or some extra work, but that's okay because the chairs have a massage setting which is quite relaxing.  Thanks Dr. Beaver and staff!

Remember a few posts back with the story about returning the lost wallet?  Well, the girls and I that day also hit a commercial kitchen and cooking supply store in downtown Honolulu.  This is what I bought.... a pizza slide.  I've been hunting for one for a while.  My pizza tastes even better when it comes out on a slide!

The past 3 mornings we've gotten out of bed only to take in some mighty hefty winds and erratic heavy rain!  Here the sun tried to sneak it's way out, but was soon overtaken by more precip laden clouds.   The rays breaking through are majestic and heavenly, but I am mesmerized by the deep shades of blue of the water.  Just amazing!

I've never seen a hibiscus with such vibrant color and unique pattern.   There is a story behind this gorgeous flower......  Today was adventure day with some of the girls.  Karen B., Theresa T. and I buckled up in the car and headed out (over to the other side of the island) to hit our first stop, Wal-Mart.  I know, an adventure all in itself, especially since I haven't stepped foot in one since we left the states for Belgium 3 years ago.  But that's not my story here.    Just 15 minutes of shopping and we were out the door with grilling charcoal, wood chips, gift wrap bags, a cute little handbag and an industrial size box of Otter Pops.  Gear stowed, check.... seat belted in, check.... windows down, check.... off to the next adventure!  As we're pulling out of the parking lot something in the middle of the street catches our eye!  Karen does a quick pull off to the side, I jumped out and run to pick up the treasure... all the time thinking it's a wallet.  Yep, it's a wallet.  Theresa and I start looking for some identification so we can contact the owner.  Well, there were several credit cards, a few gift cards, medical cards, a government check, a large amount of cash, one eye glasses prescription, a couple of I.D. cards, but no phone number to contact.  After a quick discussion, we called the eye clinic listed on the prescription note, explained the predicament and asked if they could contact the owner to have him get in touch with us.   Soon after, a call came in from the owner who gave us his correct address so we could return his lost property.  We were off and heading in his direction!  The tidy little home was easy to find, thanks to a handy-dandy GPS.  While the older gentleman (I'll call him Mr. M.) gave us a tour of his meticulously landscaped yard he explained that he had gone to McDonald's for a morning coffee and must have left his wallet on the roof of his car as he drove off.   In Mr M.'s tiny backyard paradise I spotted heliconia, ti, maile, lantana, bougainvillea, tuberose, bird of paradise, oleander, crown flower, jatropha, poinsettia, so many varieties of orchids, colorful flowering cactus, gardenia, mock orange, dessert roses, an orange tree, a lilikoi tree, an avocado tree, a mini pineapple plant and so many (MANY) more I can't name!!!  There was even a tropical bird in a large cage tucked up on the shaded back patio.  Mr. M. gingerly guided us along, patiently pointing out, naming and explaining many of the species he so tenderly cares for.   A solid 30 minutes later, with wallet and owner reunited, we three ladies once again snapped up in the car and headed out toward home.   We never know what we're going to experience when we get together.... I guess that's why we call it "Adventure Day."

I took Maggie (the Super Honda) in today for her dreaded annual inspection.  She didn't pass.  A ruptured CV boot leaking fluid is not good.  Off to the operation room..... ok, auto repair garage lift for a quick fix.  Well, it turned out to be not so quick.  So, why the picture of a Mt. Dew soda can?  I'm so glad you asked!  Let me tell you!  As I was sitting in the empty waiting room enjoying a TV marathon of House M.D., a young, harried mother pushes her way into my serene locale with a sleeping 3 year old thrown over one shoulder and a mobile phone pinned between ear and other shoulder, deep in whispered conversation the entire way.  She proceeds to set the angelic little Chase (that is his real name, no name change to protect the innocent.... you'll understand in a moment) down across a couple of chairs.  Of course the not so gentle process wakes him up.  Well, he's thirsty, so mom gives him a dollar to go buy himself a Mt. Dew from the vending machine.  So cute that he knows his way around the junk food machines at such a tender age.  Now, I'm not usually openly judgmental of other parents and their parenting styles, but sometimes certain actions (or lack of) do make me ponder a moment.  You see, little Chase, all hopped up on high octane rocket fluid, was a very thirsty (now energetic and loud!) guy.  This is a photo of his 2nd can of Mt. Dew.   Oh well, at least it wasn't coke in a baby bottle.  Needless to say, it was a long 2 1/2 hours in the repair shop.....

Here is HSL-37 was doing some rescue training.  That's not the official term and I'm sure some of my HSL friends will soon being giving me a quick lesson (and I'm good with that!), but my encyclopedic young men are busy watching a Dog Fights episode and can't be bothered at this moment.  Anyway, there's a small boat (I think Coast Guard, but I could be wrong) in the water with people ready to jump in to be rescued.  The helicopter hovers over the subject while the rescuer is lowered down on a cable.  The rescuer then plucks the victim out of the water and the pair are brought back up to the helicopter.  Pretty cool to watch!

This is the white Queen Emma lily.  The Queen Emma lily holds a place of honor in Hawaiian horticulture because of its association with island royalty.  Queen Emma (wife of Kamehameha IV) promoted health care for her people by establishing the Queen's hospital.  She also planned and developed many beautiful gardens on their estates scattered throughout the Hawaiian islands.

Bachelor night at the Cutter house.  I have a Girl's Night Out/Farewell dinner in town this evening so the boys are using the latest kitchen appliance purchase.  The new 'Set It and Forget was supposed to be a surprise birthday/father's day gift for the dad.....in the month of June.  Unfortunately, as soon as Dave entered the house upon returning from his latest trip, the boys (busting at the seams with excitement) blurted out the intel before I could even stop them!

Homeschooling in Hawaii is so much more pleasant than in some of the other locations in which we have lived.  Since the weather today has been agreeable (so far) with a light trade wind coming off the ocean, Nate decided to take a few books out to the back patio to do some studying.  I don't know how he can concentrate so intently with that beautiful blue ocean behind him!

This is the He'e tree, also know as the Octopus tree.  The berries are about the size of a large marble and are used to make leis for men.  Each branch of berries is about 18-24 inches long and hurts (but doesn't stain!) when it drops off the tree and lands on your head.

At the beginning of March I took over as the Bear den leader with our local Cub Scout troop.  Since many of the spouses are deployed or are just out of pocket for a while, we decided to be the ultimate Moms for Mother's Day and did a Bear Events Day.  In 2 1/2 hours we did a neighborhood hike, trash/recycling clean up, carved totems out of soap to earn the whittling chip, made pizzas from scratch for lunch (along with apples and grapes), discussed family grocery budgeting (and savings) AND started assembling our rockets for the upcoming Space Derby.  WOW,  what a day!   I do want to send out a very special thank you to Dillon and Megan Thoroman for beautiful lei for Mother's Day (and to their sMom and Dad for having us over for dinner).  I LOVE my Navy and Marine Corps family support system.

The boys and I went on a Saturday field trip to the Iolani Palace in on the other side of the island.  My plan was to get some photos of the exquisite interior of the plantation like Hawaiian Royal abode, but photography was not permitted.  I did get to use the camera outside on the grounds where we found these incredible trees.  The 'trunk' Nate is climbing up is actually a grouping of branches that grew hanging down from the other branches until they took root on the ground.  They are so cool to see, climb on and swing from!  If you want to learn more about the palace go to http://www.iolanipalace.org/index.php/history.html

Today being my birthday, I woke up (thanks to my 'early bird gets the worm" daughter and her 5am Happy Birthday text message!) thinking about how or what I was going to do to get a 'little more than normal' picture to share with you.  I then proceeded to spent a good portion of my morning run wracking my brain (and avoiding being hit by cars -- crazy drivers today) trying to come up with something witty or whimsical.  No luck in the idea department, but I did have a great run and a decent time!  Anyway.... I stepped into my air conditioned house (thank goodness because it's so muggy out there even at 6am!) resigned to just getting another hectic day rolling, only to be met by my 3 crazy, grinning boys and their cheers of, "Bonjour, Mama!  Bon Anniversaire, Mama!"  Despite their father having to be on travel, my sweet, considerate young gentlemen remembered my birthday.  Thank you guys,  I LOVE my present!
And yes, you still have to do school today.  Chop, chop!  Let's get moving!

This is for my friend Khristie who (still!) lives in Belgium, but swore on her sons' lives I would fall head over heals in love with Hawaii.  And, yes, I do love Hawaii, but....  Rain, rain, go away!   Quit with the nasty electrical storms (we've been told so many times now that these are so rare, NEVER happen here!), stop the erratic, swirly, whipping winds that blow the leaves back into my clean garage (Okay, Dave's clean garage), no more muggy, sticky afternoons and I'm tired of soggy shoes from running through the raging rivers that are flooding the streets!  Besides all that, I do love Hawaii!  The snapshot is of some of the waterfalls that flow off the Ko'Olau Mountains every time it rains here.

I haven't experienced rain like this since we left Belgium!  I had the pleasure of driving my husband over to the Honolulu airport this morning for an early flight to faraway lands.  He's got the Chappy with him (newly promoted!) so they all, of course, got upgraded to Business class....being frequent travelers might helped too!  Now, if I just had Chaps with me for the return trip to the base, I might have had a shorter wait to enter the base.  Heightened security measures means longer wait time.....

Congratulations to Chaplain Alan Rogers today for his promotion from Lieutenant to Lieutenant Commander.  Here, Chappy is repeating the Oath of Office, the very same oath the President of the United States recites before millions of people on inauguration day.  Each and every member of our military voluntarily raises their right hand to repeat the words "I do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter.  So help me God."

5 hours of hard work from Dave and me.  We washed, dried, waxed, scrubbed, vacuumed, shampooed and  pampered Maggie (background) and Ruby (foreground) so they were sparkling clean in the Hawaii sunshine.  That is, until the Rain Gods decided to open up and let us have it.  That much effort put into detailing the cars is almost the surest way to guarantee inclement weather.  At least the water beaded up nicely....
